“SPONTANEITY, that is the key –

to free oneself from oneself – to be inside the canvas struggling to come into existence, struggling to get out – to be born – not to impose a theory or preconceived idea of what a painting should be or how it should be composed – spontaneous gestures.  It is essential for me to lose my mind in order to paint – I must be free of thinking – thinking moves me outside the painting – when I am creating I am inside the canvas trying to get out – painting is active – spontaneous – immediate.  When I am painting, I am a servant in the service of my unconscious.  The minute I think, I am outside looking in – spontaneity is gone. Primitive, childlike, direct, magical, intense rhythmic and intuitive, are the keys for me.”
